Great report SJ. So glad to hear that things aren’t looking dire. Can’t wait for the next post!

Apparently, Rubio may join y'all in Havana soon. But, it sure looks like you're making the best of your time and opportunities until his cloud arrives.

My mother had a cousin who used to hang out with Will Rogers at a bar in Havana in the '30s . . . I think that it was in a hotel (the International?) where my cousin and Will Rogers knew the owner, who was very generous with his hospitality towards them. I imagine you going to those and other such places, reveling in a city that doesn't eat its own history while selling off landmarks. (For now, anyway.)

As always your photos are a pleasure. Your eye is so perceptive not to mention your storytelling, which I have always enjoyed. Thank you.

Sounds like an amazing experience. Glad thinks aren't as bad as the media is portraying. Is the trip just for book research or other reasons also? BTW, one can never have too many wallet-sized photos of naked or semi-naked ladies from the 30's and 40's. (Also btw, your post is dated 3/7 and today is 3/6. Don't want you to be off by a day.)

That date thing is weird because Substack dates the posts, not me. I'm here for research and to visit Monty's relatives, who have become my friends. Left the photos of the ladies for someone else...

Thank you for the wonderful report!

Fascinating. I hope no one sells to the vultures. Here in Ireland there's a housing shortage because so many homes and apartment buildings were snapped up and rented for outrageous prices that most people can't afford now. Tell Cubans that this, too, shall pass and the sooner the better.

Great to get an inside view, SJ, and glad it’s not 100% dire straights. Interestingly, the television news back here paints a picture of a place completely broken and at a standstill- the oil embargo just devastating everything. Glad to hear there’s life still going on.
